3 hour base ride

I think I’ve hit my limit, and may even be on the verge of getting a little cold. I physically and mentally CRASHED last night I got home at 7pm, and don’t even remeber 8pm. I woke up on the couch around midnight and headed upstairs in what I thought was a somewhat awake state. So I started to watch some stuff Tivo’d. BAM! out again, only to arise to some infomercial and replay what I missed from the last try at Tivo. I made it through that one and turned on NatGeo and BAM! next thing I knew it was 8am. I NEVER sleep till 8. EVER. So I wobbled downstairs dazed near half past and brewed, chatted to Bill Risch for about an hour or so as I brewed, ate and sipped. Finally shaking off the sleep, I cut my check to J for ’09 that I mailed out late and it was off to get the bike ready for an indoor spin. It was hammering down rain and being up by the rez the clouds were touching the earth, so yeah… indoor it was.

I ended up getting through about 3 sessions of Tivo’d cycling stages of various tours and making it till about the 2:30 mark before I needed to eat an entire pizza and some cookies (sausolitos!) while on the bike with about a pint of milk. So it was a full 3 hour base session with a negative split (1hr ez, 1 movin’ but capped, 1 just kinda hanging in) and unlike the swimming, it felt pretty good & natural. I guess it has to do with the year of bike focus that I just went through. So anywho, here’s the stats from the Garmin (which i’ve actually been avoiding lately)…
Bike (HR 120 – 140):
Duration: 3hrs
Distance: 44.36mi
Avg Pace: 4:03/mi
Avg Speed: 14.8mph
Max Speed: 23.2mph
Calories: 2146
Avg HR: 124bpm
Max HR: 149bpm
It was interesting reviewing the #’s from last year (of which I’m much more efficient). What I thought was noteable from this session, is that I spent most of my time in zones 2 & 3 HR-wise, but speed-wise most of the range was in zone 4. This is interesting to me in that it represents what I was feeling… I wasn’t working hard, but my speed was faster than last year and also faster than what I expected it to be.
Well, I’m off to take a vitamin and slug down some wheatgrass. I’m planning to meet Tom Haydon for a ride in Ridgefield sometime tomorrow as the weather is hoping to clear. We’ll see as the loudest lightning/thunder crash just exploded overhead and shook the house and it’s now pissing down again. It sure would be nice to get outdoors tho!
later…

  1. Well despite your pizza and beer diet it seems you are able to still maintain your bike fitness 😉 Excellent! I cant wait to get outdoors either. It has been ages since I rode my bike outside.
